5 years ago“Go away,” she groaned into the pillow that was resting on her face. “Look,” she said, moving the pillow to the side. “I know that it was kind of weird storming back to your home but where else was I supposed to go?”
“It's fine.” I tossed her a piece of fruit from where I stood by the refrigerator. “Do you want to talk about it?”

5 years agoShe nodded and propped herself up into a sitting position. I walked back over to her and sat in one of the chairs by the couch.
“It's not even that he said no. It's that I was stupid enough to think he would say yes,” she said with a half-hearted sob. I put a hand on her shoulder.

5 years ago“It's not that he doesn't like you but—” I trailed off as Jonathan entered the room. Abby turned to look at him but said nothing. I was the one who broke the silence. “What are you doing here?”
“Just making sure you are sure you want to tell her,” he said, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“Tell me what?” Abby asked.

5 years ago“You know how he asked someone else out? Well—” I waited for a second before continuing, fighting back tears. “I'm so sorry, but he asked me out. And I said—”
“No,” she interrupted. “You said no. A real friend wouldn't go on a date with their best friends crush. A real friend would say no, no matter how much she likes him!”

5 years agoI opened my mouth to reply then thought better of it and shut it again. “Are you a real friend?”
“Yes. Yes, it's just, I—” I said but was cut off by a sad look from Jonathan.
“So choose. Choose between me and Jonathan. Now!”

5 years agoShe looked more hurt than anything else and there wasn't anger behind her eyes. She was staring at me, looking desperate for the answer she wanted. I looked over her shoulder at Jonathan then back to her. My mind was whirling, coming up with so many possible scenarios for each decision. Eventually, I just sat down and hugged the pillow that was sitting on the armrest. I could feel tears, hot and wet, running down my face but I willed them back.

5 years agoAbby and Jonathan raced over to comfort me but Abby’s temper was still raging.
“Don't you touch her, you— you—” She collapsed on the chair next to me and bit her lip to stop sobs from escaping her mouth. I buried my face into the pillow and Abby buried hers into my shoulder. Jonathan, after waiting awkwardly for a moment, came to put his arm around me.

5 years agoI quickly adjusted it so it was wrapped around Abby too. After a few minutes of quietly sobbing, Abby sat back up and moved to go into my room. I sat there for a moment longer, Jonathans arm still around me, then stood up.
“I don't think we should, you know, date. It's just that Abby is so mad and— I just don't think—” I broke off as he grabbed my hand, his fingers gently wrapping around mine.

5 years agoHe squeezed it but didn't let go, even when I moved to go to my room after Abby. He pulled me close and I found myself in the circle of his arms.
“It's fine. I understand that you want to protect her. You're a good friend,” he said against my hair. I moved away from him, turned around, and sprinted for my bedroom door. I closed the door and locked it. Abby turned from where she stood by the dresser.

“Yes. Just trying to stay a good friend. Jonathan just kept asking then he grabbed my hand and hugged me. I ran in here to keep myself away from him,” I said quietly. Abby smiled.
“You really are a good friend. You like him, don't you?” she said. I nodded and she continued. “I'm sorry I yelled at you earlier.

5 years ago If you really want to date him, you can.” After a moment's hesitation, I shook my head.
“No. No, I don't think I will. You like him and a good friend doesn't date her besties crush, plus, if we dated it would be awkward for our friend group,” I said with a small smile. Abby nodded.
“So. Would it be awkward for our friend group if I asked out your ex. Well, technically you didn't go on an actual date, that I know of,” she said with a suspicious look toward the door

5 years ago“So I can't really count him as your ex, but would it be awkward for you?” I shook my head.
“I’ll go break it to him,” I said, unlocking the door. I heard a scuffle outside and opened the door but, without much surprise, I found that Jonathan wasn't there. I walked over to where he was on the couch and sat down. “I know you overheard. Go ask Abby out,” I said quietly but I could hear the harshness in my own voice.

5 years ago“I know you like her so go,” I finished in a softer voice. He smiled but didn't move.
“You know, I don't like her. I mean, I like her but not like that. There’s a reason I asked you and not her.” his voice was serious but slightly unsteady. “Are you sure you don't want to go out with me?”
“Yes. I'm sorry, but I just can't,” I said in a whisper. I leaned over and put a hand on his knee. “I'm sorry.”

5 years agoI stood back up and started to leave the room. When I reached the door of my bedroom, I turned to look at him. “Can we just pretend this never happened,” I said, gesturing between us. He nodded and I went into my room.
“Hey,” came a voice from the floor on the other side of my bed.

5 years agoI walked over to see Abby lying down with her eyes closed. I got in bed and soon sleep overtook me. I faintly heard the opening of a door and soft footsteps but thought nothing of it.
