The Lion Fish is native to the Indo-Pacific, characterized by conspicuous warning coloration with red, white, creamy, or black bands, showy pectoral fins, and venomous, spiky fin rays. Their venom consists of a neuromuscular toxin that's similar to cobra venom in toxicity. Two of the 12 species, the red lion fish & the common lion fish have established themselves as significant invasive species off the East Coast of the United States and in the Caribbean. It is believed….

This introduction may have occurred in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed an aquarium in southern Florida, releasing six lionfish into Biscayne Bay. A lionfish was discovered off the coast of Dania Beach, south Florida, as early as 1985, before Hurricane Andrew, suggesting individuals may have been purposely discarded by dissatisfied aquarium enthusiasts. This is in part because lionfish require an experienced aquarist, but are often sold to novices who find their care too difficult.

As lionfish populations grow, they put additional stress on coral reefs. For example, lionfish eat herbivores, and herbivores eat algae from coral reefs. Without herbivores, algal growth goes unchecked, which can be detrimental to the health of coral reefs.

Beautiful. Thanks for the information. I find lion fish to be beautiful & knew they were venomous. But I didn't know they were invading the ocean of the US & Caribbean.

@Sandy thank you for your wonderful comment 😊 Yes, it’s a real dilemma. There was a lot more. They multiply rapidly and lack natural predators. They are depleting the fish that are the food supply for larger species such as grouper & snapper which has an big impact on commercial & recreational fishing. They’re also showing up in South American waters. They’re now approved for sport fishing events.
