Up until 100 years ago, billions of Carolina Parakeets, the only native parrot of America, filled the skies year round. As their forests were cut to make space for farms, the parrots were shot for feeding on crops and orchards. Trappers captured them to sell as pets, and hunters sold them as colorful decorations. Hat makers and clothiers prized the Carolina Parakeet’s brilliant plumage, using feathers or entire birds to decorate ladies’ hair, hats, and gowns.

They were easily trapped or killed in large numbers, because if one bird was injured or killed, the flock would return to it. They were also killed because the noise of the large flocks of the gregarious birds was annoying to some people.

In 1886 alone, the hat trade claimed an estimated 5 million birds of various speciesβ€”victims of fashion. By 1904, they were gone in the wild. The last Carolina Parakeet died in captivity in 1918.

Beautiful.. So sad. Another victim of mans inhumanity. We could all learn valuable lesson from the animals if we could stop killing them and their habitat.

@Sandy thank you Sandy. Yes, so many incredible species are close to or already extinct because of human action, or inaction. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. I’ve read that scientists have extracted DNA and trying to find a way to recreate some of them. Sounds like real life Jurassic Park.

@Kitty Snow πŸ•ŠβœοΈπŸ™πŸΌ thank you for visiting and commenting. I’m about to go to sleep, but will definitely visit your gallery also. It breaks my heart and also angers me that a beautiful species such as this is erased from the planet for the sake of FASHION? 😭 Or because they’re too noisy and are disturbing the humans who have invaded their centuries old habitat. 😑

@Rebecca, thanks so much, I’m glad that you do. Some of the artists I follow leave info about the art they’ve posted & I also enjoy reading them. I usually learn about something I didn’t know before. I devised to give it a shot myself. Thanks for giving my confidence a boost πŸ˜ŠπŸ’•πŸ€—βœ¨πŸŒŸπŸŒ·

Heartbreaking how we’ve treated our fellow species on our earth, not to mention how we have treated our fellow humans!

@Erralee thank you my friend. Yes, it saddens me that such precious treasures are treated with such disregard until it’s too late.
