Up until 100 years ago, billions of Carolina Parakeets, the only native parrot of America, filled the skies year round. As their forests were cut to make space for farms, the parrots were shot for feeding on crops and orchards. Trappers captured them to sell as pets, and hunters sold them as colorful decorations. Hat makers and clothiers prized the Carolina Parakeetβs brilliant plumage, using feathers or entire birds to decorate ladiesβ hair, hats, and gowns.

They were easily trapped or killed in large numbers, because if one bird was injured or killed, the flock would return to it. They were also killed because the noise of the large flocks of the gregarious birds was annoying to some people.

In 1886 alone, the hat trade claimed an estimated 5 million birds of various speciesβvictims of fashion. By 1904, they were gone in the wild. The last Carolina Parakeet died in captivity in 1918.

Beautiful.. So sad. Another victim of mans inhumanity. We could all learn valuable lesson from the animals if we could stop killing them and their habitat.

@Sandy thank you Sandy. Yes, so many incredible species are close to or already extinct because of human action, or inaction. Once theyβre gone, theyβre gone. Iβve read that scientists have extracted DNA and trying to find a way to recreate some of them. Sounds like real life Jurassic Park.

@Kitty Snow πβοΈππΌ thank you for visiting and commenting. Iβm about to go to sleep, but will definitely visit your gallery also. It breaks my heart and also angers me that a beautiful species such as this is erased from the planet for the sake of FASHION? π Or because theyβre too noisy and are disturbing the humans who have invaded their centuries old habitat. π‘

Heartbreaking how weβve treated our fellow species on our earth, not to mention how we have treated our fellow humans!

@Erralee thank you my friend. Yes, it saddens me that such precious treasures are treated with such disregard until itβs too late.
